BEVERLY — The Beverly Flight Center and North Shore Community College have announced a scholarship in memory of Michael Costales, the flight instructor who was killed in an accident at Beverly Municipal Airport in August.
The Michael Costales Memorial Scholarship will benefit North Shore Community College aviation science students and flight students at the Beverly Flight Center, where Costales taught.
Costales, who lived in Weymouth, died Aug. 27 when he was struck by the propeller of a plane on the runway at Beverly Airport. The scholarship was announced on Nov. 19, which would have been his 31st birthday.
"The accident was an incredible tragedy, which greatly affected many," John Bosco, director of the aviation program at the college, said in a press release. "I think the establishment of this scholarship fund will offer the many of us who knew and worked with Michael to acknowledge his contributions and ensure his passion for teaching people to fly continues."
The college's Aviation Science Professional Pilot program provides students with training to become fixed-wing commercial pilots. The program combines classroom instruction and flight training in both aircraft and ground simulators.
